چکیده

Conceptual modelling involves many higher order cognitive processes, such as relational reasoning and abstraction, which are based on integration and maintenance of information. Evidence from cognitive psychology suggests that these processes are subject to individual differences which cannot be explained by training and experience alone. In this review, we study how the cognitive processes that enable modelling interact to produce modelling behaviour, and where in this process we can find individual differences that may explain some of the variation in performance seen in actual modelling settings. We discuss interaction between working memory, executive control and attention as they facilitate relational reasoning and abstraction, which we consider to be key cognitive processes in modelling. Eventually, a thorough understanding of modelling cognition can help us to provide better cognitive support

Insights into the origins of knowledge from the cognitive neuroscience of blindness.

Children learn about the world through senses such as touch, smell, vision, and audition, but they conceive of the world in terms of objects, events, agents, and their mental states. A fundamental question in cognitive science is how nature and nurture contribute to the development of such conceptual categories. What innate mechanisms do children bring to the learning problem? How does experien...

Managing the Threats and Opportunities Afforded by Human Sociality

Group living offers humans substantial fitness-enhancing benefits, although it also affords significant fitness-decreasing costs. To enhance these benefits and reduce these costs, individuals use emotional, cognitive, and behavioral mechanisms designed to help them effectively manage the complexities of life in highly interdependent groups. The authors briefly outline their evolutionary, functi...

O11: Applying the Methods of Psychological Assessment in Diagnosis of Talented People: Issues and Solutions

Measuring individual talent is a prerequisite of talent management. In order to do so, there are methods which have been established such as intelligence tests, general and individual tests, ratings scale and the literature of educational performance. Applying these methods are effective, if measurement error is low and validity is high. All current available methods are faced with issues relat...

The three R’s of trust

Trust is fundamental to all human exchange. It is therefore necessary to understand the behavioural logic and neural underpinnings of how it is established, maintained, broken, and repaired. There are open evolutionary questions about how trust mechanisms should and do evolve; however, here we focus on more proximate psychological and neural mechanisms that mediate trust. Our perspective single...

Computational Modelling of Mechanisms of Creativity

How can computers be used to model creativity? We address this issue in this article by starting with an examination of the two main cognitive mechanisms of human creativity: juxtaposition of the dissimilar, and deconceptualization of the familiar. We argue that a primary hurdle facing human creativity is in trying to step outside of our habituated conceptual associations. However, since comput...
